INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC LIGHT DAY – AUGUST 5

The world celebrates the International Traffic Light Day on August 5.

It was on this day, back in 1914, that the forerunner of modern devices – the first automatic traffic lights, which had red and green lights and emitted a sound signal when the light switched, appeared in the American city Cleveland.

Interestingly, the world’s first traffic light was installed long before that. On December 10, 1868, a device with two semaphore wings appeared in London, near the British Parliament building. Englishman J. P. Knight was its inventor, but his invention was operated manually.

The first traffic light in Ukraine was installed in Kharkiv in 1936.
