Living in energy saving conditions is a necessity today. All of us – road users – have noticed how much darker not only our houses and flats have become, but also the roads. There are fewer streetlights, not all traffic lights are working, road markings are less visible, and unregulated pedestrian crossings are almost invisible… Driving on dark roads and unlit pedestrian crossings increases the risk of a road accidents.
The International Charitable Foundation “Assistance to Victims of Road Accidents” urges to take care of your visibility on the road and safety of each other. Do not ignore reflective elements and use them as much as possible on dark streets. Mark yourself on the road with reflective bracelets, tapes and vests or at least light-colored clothing. This is especially important for pedestrians: reflective elements reduce the risk of being hit by car by 6 times! The visibility of pedestrian on the road increases to 130-150 meters; without them, a driver will only notice a pedestrian at 25-30 meters.
If you are crossing the road in the dark, turn on the flashlight in your mobile phone, put a reflective collar on your dog. Reflective accessories can also be fashionable and stylish. For example, an eco-friendly shopping bag that reflects light.
Dear teachers, we encourage you to talk to children more often about the importance of wearing reflective elements. We also invite you to look with your students at the photos and videos of the All-Ukrainian competition “Safe Country”, whose young participants demonstrate the effectiveness of using reflective elements on the road. They are published in the “CONTEST” section of this website, in the “Youth for Road Safety” nomination from different years.
