In the past six months, 1,982 road accidents involving children occured in Ukraine, in which 69 young road users were killed and 2,263 were injured.
Of these, 366 accidents were directly caused by children, in which 13 children were killed and 450 were injured.
The main causes of child injuries on the road are lack of adult supervision, disregard for or lack of knowledge about traffic rules, and risky behavior by young road users.
To keep children safe from road accidents, it is important to regularly remind them of the rules of behavior on the road:
– how to cross the road correctly at pedestrian crossings, both with and without traffic lights;
– why it is important to look both ways before crossing the road and to avoid distractions like using a phone or wearing headphones;
– why they should walk their bicycle or scooter across the street instead of riding it;
– how important it is to wear a helmet and other protective gear when riding a bicycle or scooter;
Set an example for your child by following the traffic rules by yourself: cross the road without breaking the rules, fasten your seatbelt when getting into a car, follow speed limit, and be attentive and responsible.
According to the Patrol Police, during the first six months of 2025, there were 11,194 road accidents with casualties in Ukraine. These accidents resulted in 1,367 deaths and 13,895 injuries.
The main causes of fatal accidents remain exceeding the speed limit, driving into oncoming traffic not related to overtaking, and pedestrians crossing the road in places not designated for this purpose.
