THE 7TH GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK ROAD SAFETY WEEK HAS STARTED IN UKRAINE – VIDEO

The 7th Global Road Safety Week dedicated to rethinking mobility and creating comfortable and safe conditions for all road users, including pedestrians and users of personal bicycle transport and electric vehicle has started in Ukraine on May 15.

During the event, experts in the field of transport and infrastructure, the national police discussed the situation with road safety in Ukraine; legislative initiatives and changes related to traffic rules; prospects for the development of road transport and infrastructure to create a barrier-free environment; state of road accidents and the work being done to eliminate it; educational project on road safety for youth.

 

As the Director of the separate division of the “Kyiv Interregional Branch” of the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Research Institute of Transport Medicine” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Yurii Chornyi noted during his speech, Ukraine joins the 7th Global Road Safety Week, which takes place around the world, as road traffic injuries remain a real challenge.

 

– According to statistics about 1.3 million people die every year worldwide as a result of road accidents, and about 50 million are injured, so the World Health Organization and the United Nations Regional Commissions have been developed the Global Plan of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, which targeted to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by at least 50% by 2030, – said Yurii Chornyi.

 

During the event, the First Deputy Chief of the Department of Patrol Police Oleksii Biloshytskyi spoke about the latest statistics on road accidents on Ukrainian roads.

 

In general, in the first four months of 2023, 6 094 road accidents with killed and/or injured were registered in Ukraine, which is 1.8% more than in the same period in 2021 – 5 988 road accidents; 852 people died as a result of road accidents, which is 8.5% more than in the same period in 2021– 785 people; another 7548 people were injured, which is 4.5% more than in the same period in 2021 – 7 220 people. The largest number of road accidents with killed and injured were registered in: Dnipropetrovsk region – 556 road accidents; Kyiv – 526 road accidents; Lviv region – 503 road accidents.

 

– It should be noted that in the four months of this year, 2032 road accidents involving pedestrians were registered in the country, in which 318 people were killed and 1845 pedestrians were injured. In addition, attention should be paid to the type of accidents involving cyclists, thus, during the four months of this year, 248 accidents involving cyclists were registered on the country’s street and road network, in which 40 cyclists were killed and 212 were injured, – Oleksii Biloshytskyi said.

During the event Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Volodymyr Kreidenko informed the public about the draft laws on road safety.

 

In particular, a draft law which provides road safety requirements in the planning and development of territories (№ 8354); a draft law which provides learn of traffic rules in educational institutions (№ 8356); a draft law which provides an increase in fines for violation of traffic rules (№ 9089).

 

In his speech, Deputy Minister of Health Ihor Kuzin called on Ukrainians to join the annual charity action “Give Blood to Save Lives” and to become a donor of blood and its components.

 

“We would like this year’s Road Safety Week to be held with the awareness of what we can all do to reduce road death. In particular, blood donation charity action “Give Blood to Save Lives” is planned as part of the Week. Therefore, we call on Ukrainians to join the annual action and to become a donor of blood and its components,” Ihor Kuzin said.

 

Ukrainians will be able to join the charity blood donation action “Give Blood to Save Lives” from May 15 to 19. You can give blood for the victims of road accidents in all Blood centers in Ukraine (during the week, in accordance with donor’s reception hours).

 

In addition to the charity blood donation action, the Road Safety Week in Ukraine will include a number of events targeted specifically at younger generation.

 

In particular, on May 15 acceptance of works for the 6th All-Ukrainian photo and video works competition of the national project “Safe Country” has started. The Week’s events also include annual unified online lesson on road safety in educational institutions (materials for lessons developed jointly with the Ministry of Education and the ICF “Assistance to Victims of Road Accidents” can be found on the Foundation’s website in the Unified National Lesson section).

 

According to Oleh Yeresko, General Director of the Directorate of Preschool education, Out of Schools and Inclusive Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry has been supporting the Weeks for many years and is constantly developing new methods and approaches to improve the educational component in the issue of forming safe behavior on the road of the participants in the educational process.

 

“In order to reduce road deaths and injuries, it is necessary to create a culture of safe movement. The most effective way to develop any skills is to start with educational institutions. That’s why the Ministry of Education and Science supports the events held as part of the Road Safety Weeks,” Oleh Yeresko said.

We want to remind you that All-Ukrainian Road Safety Week is held annually in two stages (in spring and autumn) to implement the 2nd Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 in the world, with the assistance of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, the Government of Ukraine, local authorities.

 

The events are held in cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the National Police of Ukraine, State Service of Ukraine for Transport Safety, the Road Safety Department of the State Road Agency of Ukraine, the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine, a number of other governmental and non-governmental departments and structures.
