June 3 is World Bicycle Day, approved by the UN General Assembly in 2018 in support of the development and the promotion of cycling as one of the most environmentally friendly, reliable, healthy, affordable and safe modes of transport.
In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals, well-established cycling infrastructure contributes to air purification, congestion reduction and, consequently, the fight against climate change; saving time to meet most of the social needs of the population, its mobility and, consequently, economic growth; and from the point of view of the World Health Organization – also to support public health, because it is known that cycling reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, some cancers, obesity, diabetes, has a positive effect on mental health.
The UN General Assembly has called on Member States to adopt best practices for the promotion of cycling among all members of society, and therefore welcomes any initiatives to organize cycling at national and local levels as a means of improving physical and mental health and well-being, as well as the formation of a culture of cycling in society. Thus, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the WHO have published
a Pan-European Master Plan for the Promotion of Cycling to Assist Countries in Developing National Cycling Promotion Policies.
In many countries, the bicycle is actively used everywhere along with other modes of transport. It is also popular in Ukraine, but due to the lack of proper infrastructure it is more common in small settlements and almost unprofitable in a metropolis.
The International Charitable Foundation “Assistance to Victims of Road Accidents” congratulates all cycling professionals and cycling enthusiasts! For the sake of road safety, we urge you to follow the rules of the road, driving culture, use of protective equipment and reflective elements.
