Road Safety Week has started in Ukraine

The annual All-Ukraine Road Safety Week has started in Ukraine, dedicated to the prevention of road traffic injuries in the country, compliance with traffic rules and safe behavior on the streets and roads. The week is aimed to draw public attention to the problem of road accidents and to unite the efforts of government agencies, departments, structures, the interested public and the media to overcome it.

The International Charitable Foundation has traditionally joined the Week as co- organizers. We are one of the largest specialized public structures that take care of road safety in Ukraine and develop projects to promote and prevent road traffic injuries. The President of the Foundation Yuriy Chornyi took part in the press conference that started the Week and announced the events that will be initiated by the organization.

With the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Foundation plans to hold a traditional all-Ukraine annual lesson on road safety in secondary schools on November 19. Together with the Ministry of Education and Science, a special manual and video materials for students have been prepared, which can be used during the preparation and conduct of the lesson. They can be found on the Foundation’s website in the Single National Lesson section or on our Safe Country YouTube channel.

On November 16, the results of the annual all-Ukraine youth competition of photo and video works of the national project «Safe Country» will be summed. It has been held in Ukraine for the 4th year in a row. The online broadcast, and then the recording of the event, will be available on the YouTube channel «Safe Country».

Specialists of the Foundation will also join the round table of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine «Safe educational environment. Organizational and educational aspects of improving the safety of children and youth on the roads». Together with the specialists of the Kyiv Regional Institute of Postgraduate Education of Teachers, they plan to present a new program to improve the skills of teachers in terms of mandatory acquisition of skills in initial care, practical knowledge and skills to promote this topic in the educational institutions.

As every year, the Foundation will also hold a traditional all-Ukraine charity event to donate blood for the victims of the accident «Give blood to save lives». On November 18, the action will take place in Kyiv at NDSL «Okhmatdyt», and within a week everyone will be able to join it in any of the Blood Centers in Ukraine.

All-Ukraine Road Safety Week will take place on November 15-21, 2021.

According to the WHO, road traffic injuries are one of the world’s biggest health problems. More than a thousand people are injured or injured every day. The risk of deaths in road accidents varies from country to country, but 70% are in low- and middle-income countries.

Every year, according to various statistics, Ukraine loses more than 3,000 of its citizens in road accidents, more than 30,000 are injured. In the first ten months of 2021, according to the Patrol Police, there were 154,480 accidents on Ukrainian roads, which is almost 14% more than last year. However, there is a decrease in the level of victims and injured. During this period, 2,592 people died in Ukraine (8.8% less), 24,905 – were injured (6.8% less). Also during this period in Ukraine there were 3,182 accidents involving children, in which 157 children died and 3,591 were injured. The main causes of accidents with fatalities and injuries: exceeding the safe and established speed; violation of maneuvering rules; violation of traffic rules at intersections; violation of the rules of pedestrian crossings; non-compliance with the distance.
